Daun salam is the leaf of a shrub/tree in the myrtle family (Myrtaceae) and thus has nothing to do with bay leaf, which it is often compared to or replaced by. The leaf only resembles the bay leaf, but is totally different in flavour. From its appearance, daun salam is also often called “Indonesian bay leaf”.
