Tamarind, asam or asem is a type of fruit that tastes sour; commonly used as a mixture of spices in many Indonesian cuisines as a flavoring or acidic flavor enhancer in food, for example in sour vegetables or sometimes in pempek soup. Asam is also used for traditional herbal medicine mixtures sold by mobile herbalists, usually mothers who carry baskets with bottles containing various herbs (jamu gendong).
