A cobek or tjobèk is a rubbing stone that is used in Indonesian cuisine to rub spices and other ingredients together for sambal, among other things. The kitchen tool is also called mortar, although it is generally not stamped into the stone. By rubbing the spices, the scents blend into one whole.
